Lohe Cove Cache
Lohe went along to place a cache in his favorite spot, Lohe Cove, our name for Davis Beach or Ka Iwi Coastline or Queen's beach, take your pick. This is such a great spot for dogs and kids, a cove inside and a swimming hole outside, both protected from the open southern swell by an outcrop of reef. This area was saved from development in the 80's, but can still be developed as it is still zoned urban, something the governor is trying to change. The Davis family once had a lovely house here on what they called Awawamalu Ranch back in the 30's and 40's, which was wiped away by the deadly tsunami of April 1, 1946 which also wiped out the Laupahoehoe peninsula on the Island of Hawaii as well as many other communities that day. The Davis family escaped intact, but never lived there again. It is about a 15 minute walk from the Makapuu lighthouse trail parking lot, just go down towards the water instead of up the mountain. Keep to the left if you want to go to the swimming hole, you can also walk around the point to the right, eventually coming to Sandy Beach. We love this area and hope that you get to visit it someday. check out geocache.com for coordinates of our cache.
