Lohe Cove Cache
Lohe went along to place a cache in his favorite spot, Lohe Cove, our name for Davis Beach or Ka Iwi Coastline or Queen's beach, take your pick. This is such a great spot for dogs and kids, a cove inside and a swimming hole outside, both protected from the open southern swell by an outcrop of reef. This area was saved from development in the 80's, but can still be developed as it is still zoned urban, something the governor is trying to change. The Davis family once had a lovely house here on what they called Awawamalu Ranch back in the 30's and 40's, which was wiped away by the deadly tsunami of April 1, 1946 which also wiped out the Laupahoehoe peninsula on the Island of Hawaii as well as many other communities that day. The Davis family escaped intact, but never lived there again. It is about a 15 minute walk from the Makapuu lighthouse trail parking lot, just go down towards the water instead of up the mountain. Keep to the left if you want to go to the swimming hole, you can also walk around the point to the right, eventually coming to Sandy Beach. We love this area and hope that you get to visit it someday. check out geocache.com for coordinates of our cache.
Doggie Drugs
What is a not fun morning? one where you open your dog crate and he has barfed up all his expensive flea meds. Not fun for sure, for anyone. So now I give him his meds with wet food in the morning to give him lots of time to digest, and if giving more than one formula, be sure you leave several hours between. Even for the big pups - trust me on this one. A good source for pet meds is
Even though I like to support the local pet stores, they are pretty expensive and I love just looking at this site even if I don't buy anything, they have really cute contests as well. If you can find your meds here you will save over your vet, guaranteed. Otherwise just bite the bullet and buy what you need - they don't carry Confortis so I have to get that locally, but it works so well that I wouldn't be without it for a day. It is like he is in a "flea bubble" and they can't touch him

Lohe Cove Cache!
On Sunday Dad Allan and dog and I went out to Davis Beach on the Ka Iwi Shoreline. This is Lohe’s favorite spot to romp in the calm water and fetch sticks and run around poking his hound nose up other visitor’s butts. Oh well. So a suitable spot for a cache named after his favorite spot! With his approval on location, Dad dropped the cache. Location to come soon, along with pictures.

Pet Blessing
Tomorrow is the feast day of St. Francis of Assisi, of whom it is written "Francis' love of nature stands out in bold relief in the world he moved in. He delighted to commune with the wild flowers, the crystal spring, and the friendly fire, and to greet the sun as it rose upon the fair Umbrian vale." Today we took our Lohe to be blessed by Fr. Tom Gross at St. John Vianney Church in Kailua. It was a simple affair with about a dozen of our fellow parishioners and their dogs, cats, guinea pigs and cockatiels. The blessing was followed by the sprinkling of holy water on the assembled.
Blessed are you, Lord God, maker of all living creatures. You called forth fish in the sea, birds in the air and animals on the land. You inspired St. Francis to call all of them his brothers and sisters. We ask you to bless this pet. By the power of your love, enable it to live according to your plan. May we always praise you for all your beauty in creation. Blessed are you, Lord our God, in all your creatures! Amen.”
The blessing was followed by much tail sniffing and circling, and then all went along their way. A wonderful fall tradition in our church and a first for our puppy at 7 mos. old. Tomorrow, an adventure to hide a geocache on the Maunawili trail. Geopup is long for the romp!!

'Ilio Inspiration
Seeing Oahu through a doggie ('ilio's) eyes! Lots of good things to sniff and mongoose to chase and birds to fly after - oops, my Lohe (short for Kolohe, meaning rascal) is too big to fly. His shar pei/ rhodesian ridgeback heritage - ok, he's a poi dog - keep him grounded although he is a heck of a jumper. Particularly if you are holding cheese!
We wander near and far to coves and trails, places with great views, places that love dogs and some places that aren't thrilled with them - but we seek out spots that a big energetic pup can romp and get his ya-yas out, as I like to say. Which means he doesn't destroy the house with his pent up energy. or snack on the cat.
Dogs made the journey to the Hawaiian Islands with the earliest Polynesians, who used them for companionship and most likely food (ok, food) but things have changed (in most cultures). Dogs now must meet Hawaii quarantine control regulations to be admitted into the state which can be handled several ways, depending on how much time their owners have before hand to prepare for the trip.
Stay tuned for roaming news and tips, hopefully some helpful links, photos, geocaching updates and other goodies, too!
